1. General characteristics of paper packaging
Today, paper accounts for nearly half of all packaging materials. Thanks to advances in science and technology, paper can be produced at a relatively low cost. Paper packaging is commonly used for:
- Dry foods: cereals, biscuits, bread, baked goods, tea, coffee, sugar, and flour
- Frozen and refrigerated foods, including ice cream
- Liquid foods and beverages such as fruit juice, milk, and dairy products
- Fresh products such as vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish
- Transportation and shipping packaging
Paper packaging is popular because it offers:
- Good mechanical strength
- Lightweight properties
- Biodegradability and environmental friendliness
- Easy recyclability
However, paper packaging also has some limitations:
- It absorbs moisture and water easily and can tear when wet
- It is not suitable for prolonged exposure to humid environments or outdoor conditions
- The recommended moisture content of packaging paper is typically around 6–7%
To overcome these limitations, manufacturers improve paper strength by laminating multiple layers together. Paper is one of the oldest packaging materials and can be treated to provide moisture resistance, oxidation resistance, antimicrobial properties, non-stick surfaces, flame resistance, water resistance, high slip performance, gloss, and grease resistance.
Modern paper materials can also be engineered to achieve specific optical properties and porosity levels.

2. Functions of paper packaging
- Protection: Protects products from environmental factors, climate conditions, and microorganisms
- Tamper evidence: Helps assure consumers that the contents have not been altered during distribution
- Storage and transportation: One of the most important functions of paper packaging
- Distribution: Facilitates product handling and delivery
- Information: Displays brand name, product name, manufacturer, distributor, ingredients, expiration date, and marketing information
- Environmental sustainability: Easy to recycle and reuse
3. Structure of paper packaging
Paper can be produced from various raw materials, including:
- Straw
- Wood chips
- Tree bark
- Wood pulp
- Recycled waste paper
- Softwood fibers
- Hardwood fibers
The strength of paper depends on:
- Fiber source and type
- Manufacturing technology
- Density
- Thickness

4. Paper packaging for food products
Paper packaging used for food applications must comply with food safety regulations.
Examples include:
- Food Safety Law No. 55/2010/QH12
- Decree No. 38/2012/ND-CP
- Circular No. 19/2012/TT-BYT
According to these regulations, food-contact packaging and containers manufactured domestically or imported must meet food safety requirements. Manufacturers are required to obtain conformity declarations or food safety compliance certifications issued by the relevant authorities.
5. Brief history of paper packaging
